Our first step in understanding these flows was to eliminate the transverse direction (perpendicular to the downhill one) from the model. In this manner, we are left with 1D problem (one space and one time dimension). We solve the resulting 1D PDE numerically, and obtain the results for the fluid profile, shown in Fig. 1, which gives snapshots of the fluid profile as it flows down an incline. This figure gives two profiles: flow down a vertical plane ("unstable"), and the flow down a slightly inclined plane ("stable").
